Heisman Trophy Betting Odds: Spencer Rattler Opens As Favorite

A new college football season kicks off in less than a week, and that means new faces, new stars and new Heisman Trophy futures betting odds for the coming year.

Returning Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler has remained a slight favorite on the college football futures market throughout the offseason and checks in at +600 ahead of the Sooners’ Week 1 contest at Tulane. Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei is next at +750 and Alabama quarterback Bryce Young is third at sportsbooks and betting sites at +900.

Among the college football betting favorites, the first nine players listed are quarterbacks despite the fact that the trophy went to a skill position player just last season – Alabama receiver DeVonta Smith. Texas running back Bijan Robinson is the first non-QB on the board at +2800.

The Heisman hasn’t gone to the preseason betting favorite since Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield won it in 2017. Ensuing winners in Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray, LSU quarterback Joe Burrow and Smith had odds anywhere from +2000 to +3500 early in the year.

We’ll see if that trend continues in 2021, or if one of the marquee quarterbacks like Rattler and Uiagalelei can take it home in December. Let’s take a look at the latest college football odds for the Heisman.

Oklahoma QB Spencer Rattler

  • Current odds: +600 at DraftKings
  • Opening game: @ Tulane, Sep. 4

Expected betting impact: It’s no surprise the Oklahoma sophomore is on top of the board on betting apps after passing for more than 3,000 yards with 28 touchdowns in 2020. The Sooners are also serious playoff contenders and should be on the big stage all season long.

Rattler is a pass-first quarterback with good feet – he added six rushing scores last season and showed solid decision-making. His best performance came on a 30-for-41 passing day for 387 yards and four touchdowns against Kansas State, a showing that was overlooked by Oklahoma suffering an upset loss.

Clemson QB D.J. Uiagalelei

  • Current odds: +750 at DraftKings
  • Opening game: No. 5 Georgia in Charlotte, Sep. 4

Expected betting impact: It’s Uiagalelei’s time at Clemson with Trevor Lawrence off to the Jacksonville Jaguars as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. While he was near the top of the Heisman betting board for much of his career, Lawrence was ultimately passed up by other contenders.

One of the problems for Lawrence was lack of quality competition. He didn’t play many marquee nonconference games and the majority of his work was done against lower-tier ACC competition.

We’d expect Uiagalelei to become the Heisman betting favorite entering Week 2 if he puts up big numbers against the Bulldogs.

Alabama QB Bryce Young

  • Current odds: +900 at DraftKings
  • Opening game: No. 14 Miami in Atlanta, Sep. 4

Expected betting impact: Nick Saban is ready to hand Young the keys to the most powerful program in the nation when the defending champs open a new season against Miami at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The former five-star recruit out of Mater Dei was ranked the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the nation before arriving in Tuscaloosa. The California high school powerhouse has produced NFL quarterbacks like Matt Barkley and Matt Leinart, and some believe Young could eventually be the best of them all.

Young saw very limited action as a freshman in 2020, completing 13 of 22 attempts for 156 yards and one touchdown. Now we’ll see him match up with another Heisman contender in Week 1 as the Tide take on Miami quarterback D’Eriq King (+2000) and the Hurricanes.

Alabama also plays at Florida in Week 3, where Young will get his first taste of a truly hostile crowd at the Swamp. If he plays well and the Tide win both games, we could see those Heisman odds go a lot shorter than +900.
